After having been caught out several times on impassable roads suggested on “Curvy” or even “Fast and Curvy”, I always check the route using Google Streetview. I have found Streetview coverage in 2025 to be pretty comprehensive. I would imagine that this is a pretty common usage; it certainly is amongst the people I ride with.
The process for doing a Streetview preview from within Kurviger is unnecessarily cumbersome. It takes 2 steps after clicking on the “Show on Google Maps” option:
Once Google Maps opens and the “Browse Streetview Images” icon is clicked, often finding and selecting the actual road in question is really difficult when there are many roads in the vicinity. This can easily lead to a mistake. Kurviger already has the precise location of the point so it should not need another manual step to visually locate the point in Google Maps as you have to now.
Once a location is clicked, the Streetview image is always 90° out, so you have to do either a 90° or 270° rotation until you get a useful view.
When you are doing this many, many times for a longer or more complicated route, I find this very tedious and irritating. I think it’s time that Kurviger offers an “Open in Streetview” option that eliminates these steps to help streamline the route planning process. This feature is excellently implemented in Stegra.io. I have found it so useful that I am sometimes prepared to put up with some of the less attractive features of that software to do my ride plan.
I agree, it would be beneficial to have a ditect button to Streetview. Currently, the buttons are quite large, so for me it would be ok to split the Google button in two.
Onr thing I do not understand - how should Kurviger determine which way you want to look? You’d still have to rotate 180° 50% of the time. Still, if it is right 50% of the time, it wold be fine. Maybe if there are no crossroads nearby, the direction does not matter and you just want to see what the road öooks like. If there is a Crossroad, that is probably the directoon you want to see…
I use Streetview not often, but I fully agree, that sometimes the small things can be nasty when you repeat it.
I also have some of these on my list, for example: Try to create 10 favorites in a row, it is no fun. Such small changes, which will not be visible in any changelog, can change a lot.
Often it does not matter which direction you are looking because you are examining the road itself. I find that I am looking forward into a corner say, only about 30% of the time.
I get placed on the exactly the same location in Google Maps, where I can open the street view directly on that spot without any need to visually locate it on the map first:
Yup. That is what I meant, even though my screenshots were from smartphone, the same button exists on PC an you do not gave to drop the little man manually.
Still, I agree, it would be nice to have an additional dedicated button like in stegra.io, as I often switch from Kurviger to Streetview. I’d vote for it.
Well… those buttons are anyway not in a prominent place, so that should be no issue. And “rarely used cases” are maybe not so rare for some users, like @Evan_R explained:
Although I personally do not check every section, I do use it quite often too. I am actually using this way more often then Mapillary-Button… like at least 100 times more often… I open Mapillary only in cases when there is no Streetview or I need a “second opinion”. But that’s me. And then there are others.
