First ride with Kurviger and Apple CarPlay - Wows and Downs

Hi there, this is my first post in this forum.

I support Kurviger since many years with a Tourer subscription, and just lately I have upgraded to Tourer+ in order to use the iOS App as a navigation device. Today I had the first opportunity to have a test ride. I ride a Honda CRF1100L with integrated TFT display which is Apple CarPlay (ACP) compatible. This display has a touch feature which is disabled as soon as the motorcycle is moving. While the bike is moving, I can only navigate using some buttons on the left handlebar. I am using an Apple SE (Debug information iPhone12,8, iOS 18,5).

Okay, I loaded my preferred standard route into the app, which I know very well. The ACP screen prompted me that Kurviger is running on the phone, so I took the phone to change to ACP. Then I heard an announcement in my headhone, then the app crashed. So I started the app on the TFT again and was prompted again to use my phone to have it run on ACP.

After that, the application ran without further crashes. However, the voice announcements were not available anymore. I started Spotify and got some music, so sound is working, but no Kurviger announcements.

Another thing which I have to work out: My route is about 100 km long, it has about ten waypoints. The app would not show me the total riding time and distance, it always showed me the time and distance to the next waypoint.

Okay, let’s talk about the general appearance:

Kurviger has a very nice screen design, the 3D map is very clear, the balance between simplycity and details is spot on. This is a huge advantage, other apps have less clear screen designs.

The position of the arrow in the map always lagged behind some 10 or 20 meter behind my actual position, but that did not cause any problems. I very much enjoyed the autozoom feature, it makes finding the right exit in a roundabout very easy.

I am missing some features:

It should be possible to search for destinations, bookmarks and planned routes without having to use the phone. For comparison: Both Calimoto and Scenic can do that.

I missed a speedometer. Some sort of compass would be nice. Does Kurviger provide information on speed cameras and temporarily closed roads?

I forced the app to reroute by taking a shortcut in my route. Although I was riding on the original route again, Kurviger tried to make me turn around in order to get to the missed waypoint. Is there an option to avoid that? Good thing: I was able to skip the waypoint only using the buttons on my bike, so I did not have to stop or maybe even stop, put off my gloves and get my phone out of my jacket.

I very much look forward to see Kurviger App become better and better. It already looks very promising.

Welcome to the Forum @Sampleman and thanks for the detailed feedback

Carplay is still in the beta phase so keep your eyes peeled for updates.

When the ACP display tells you that the app is running on the phone, you do not actually have to take out the phone - just press the button on the ACP display and it should switch.

Also the total riding time and distance should be available soon.

Speedometer should come soon, it is a planned feature for IOS, just a step behind Android at the moment.

Warning for speed cameras is not available - currently you would have to use an extermal app as blitzer.de, but I jave not tested if and how it works on ACP.

Closed roads are currently only available from OSM, but pressure to implement online trafic data is rising… :slightly_smiling_face:

It would be good to have your unbiased view on “Skip” function. Currently there are two different implementations - a very simple SKIP to the next waypoint on ACP and a bit more powerful (and complex) SKIP, when using the navigation on the phone.

Developers are always happy to read constructive feedback on the forum, so keep posting your experiences and needs.

Das funktioniert sehr gut mit den richtigen Einstellungen. Neben dem Warnton wird auch ein Overlay angezeigt.

Skipping waypoints is very important to me, because 9 in 10 cases where my navi drives me crazy is when it wants me to go somewhere I don’t want to go.

Skipping the next waypont should be as easy as possible. Keep in mind that many bikes with built in ACP screen do not have a touch option when the bike is moving (safety reasons).

I would love to have the following solution: You are riding on a planned track, you have left your route and missed one or more waypoints, but now you are on your route again. Now the application pops up a message saying “It seems you are on your right track again, do you want me to skip all missed waypoints?” Press “enter” to accept, wait 30 seconds to decline.
