Road name changes

Hi,

Wasn’t sure where to mention this so trying here. When looking at turn by turn instructions for a route I find the following:

Turn right onto Greendale–Myrniong Road (C318)

At roundabout, take exit 3 onto High Street, C318

220m (77.69km) 0min (1h 21min)

Waypoint 4

23.84km (102km) 22min (1h 44min)

Turn left onto High Street

82m (102km) 0min (1h 44min)

This High Street isn’t 23 km long. What happens is that High St changed it’s name multiple times. It starts in Greendale in Victoria starting as High St, then becomes Greendale-Trentham Rd, Myrniong-Trentham Rd, Blackwood Rd, Cosmo Rd where we finally see the left turn into another High St in Trentham, a different High St that we turned into in Greendale. It looks like

This isn’t a problem as such. I was trying to automate creating a ride document and this popped up. Because there’s no turns as such into any of those alternate names we never see any instructions about them or mention of their names. Not sure if this is a thing or not, just a happening. It does make the instructions look odd and happens a lot where roads change their names.

In general, if you are driving straight, kurviger will not give the turn instructions and mention the road name change.

Here is an example where the road name changes 10 times, but no turn instructions or announcements whatsoever are made, as the route section always continues straight, without turning: https://kurv.gr/V7WhG

It is the way the app is currently designed.

For the analysis, it would be helpful to post the link to the route, so that the experts can have a look at it.

I figured it was working as designed but it does lead to having that wierdness I talked about as it doesn’t show the road name changes.

I didn’t know if roads changing names was common around the world, it happens in Australia quite a lot. I thought that made when asking for all turn instructions

There could be a checkbox to also show entries like, maybe, “Continue on ” to show the road name is there but it isn’t a turn. Not a big thing and may cause more probems than it solves. Was just a thought.

I realize that this might not be ideal since, strictly speaking, it’s not correct. But I didn’t really understand why you would need a checkbox like that. We always appreciate feedback

We do club rides and set routes for them and I was playing with creating a ride sheet with a shortened version of the ride instructions. I used the .csv file from the turn instructions and playing with AI to create something that included the turns we make with the names of the roads we turned onto. This is where I noticed about it not listing some road names. When the road changes name there isn’t a turn so there’s no mention of the road name at all. This could make it a bit confusing for people as it would be nice that they know what road they are turning from. From that bit of the turn instructions I listed

That “exit 3” into high street. That High Street changes name to the “Greendale-Trentham Road”. The “Greendale-Trentham Road” becomes “Blackwood Road”. “Blackwood Road” changes name to “Cosmo Road” then there’s the left turn into High Street (High Street in Trentham, not High Street in Greendale).

I thought if there was an option to output "Continue onto " when there was a road name change in the turn instructions the ride sheet might be clearer. People would know what road name they were on, that there was a road name change and when there was some turn instructions they knew the name of the road they were turning from - not because it is mentioned in the turn instruction, but because the road name had been mentioned.

The instructions would become something like

Turn right onto Greendale–Myrniong Road (C318)

At roundabout, take exit 3 onto High Street, C318

220m (77.69km) 0min (1h 21min)

Continue on Greendale-Trentham Road
Continue on Blackwood Road
Continue on Cosmo Road

Waypoint 4

23.84km (102km) 22min (1h 44min)

Turn left onto High Street

82m (102km) 0min (1h 44min)

Gives an idea that there are name changes and a better idea of what roads you are travelling on even if they are just name changes.

Not one of the bigger issues for sure - but an idea that may find a use.

I can’t pick up the name changes from the ride instructions so you do get that wierd "exit 3 into high st followed by turn left into high st some 30kms later but, of course, they are different High Streets

But I agree: it’s rather a minor issue and perhaps even more relevant for a roadbook than for active navigation, where a “continue on” could also be considered unnecessary information, since it’s not an active instruction that requires any action.
