Hi everyone,

surely not trivial either, but annoying: you plan (quite stupidly in the app, of course) Route A via B-C to D… without any restrictions, and what do you find out then… at B there’s a dead end and at C it’s the town center — nice, but a pedestrian zone… I don’t have the track handy right where that happened, but it happens quite often, e.g., when B is Sigmaringen.

perhaps they can tweak it a bit so that via-points are only passed through and not routed directly into.

Not for me. The via point (SP) is set there and Kurviger routes you to and through it. What is the expectation? Should Kurviger ignore the SP?

No, Kurviger shouldn’t set it 🙃

Take a route you know or a place and only use Kurviger’s search, set the start 5km beforehand and a town as a via point and then also search through to the end…

Then something like this happens for me…

Sorry, you explicitly say VIA. Normally, most people plan between two points and put a few waypoints in between. If I set my waypoint in the city center, whether by tapping or searching, we are supposed to go through there.

The next person gets desperate because Kurviger refuses to route them past a sight in a city, for example.

just to clarify again I AM still the one setting the waypoint, exactly that is the point!!! Kurviger does that itself and VIA means for me I want to go, for example, down the left bank of the Rhine, and how I get there doesn’t matter to me

Yes, VIA and not into the city center which is blocked off from all sides anyway.

I get what you mean now?

You just typed in Sigmaringen, took that entry without a “street name” — which in Kurviger is precisely that point, presumably the town center.

 ![Screenshot_20260923_210657](https://forum.kurviger.com/uploads/default/original/3X/0/9/096e106cbaf3119b3fae9e4d84e9942a9b064579.jpeg)

But you want to plan a tour from A “via” Sigmaringen to B? And Kurviger is supposed to route right through Sigmaringen, doesn’t matter where, as long as it goes through Sigmaringen?

Do you want Kurviger to automatically find a route that just passes near this point?

Btw. I have Maps disabled, so you’ll have to explain that to me step by step.

that’s almost always the city center if I see this correctly… when I’m planning a tour I can of course pick quickly in the web planner too, but that’s not the point.

actually just that when you see this as a waypoint, one-way streets, pedestrian zones or similar aren’t automatically taken into account,

or you introduce the “VIA” option in the web planner as a transit point on the route between A and “n” which is then included with the route settings

I checked in OSM. That’s simply a coordinate where the mapper says „the town is called Sigmaringen“, meaning where the name should be placed on the map. (Place = town, name = Sigmaringen). More or less wherever it fits.

_Perhaps place=town can be used as an indicator in the sense that the label „Sigmaringen“ isn’t actually a POI you can drive to, but rather something you want to drive past approximately?! That’s presumably what Maps does._

* * *

Otherwise, I’m heading off to bed thoroughly confused. Today one person is asking how to avoid towns even better, and the other is asking how to drive through towns even better. 😆

* * *

Jokes aside .. I don’t know if that’s a Maps feature that simplifies things; I don’t use Maps.

I myself move such a point because I need to have a very good reason to drive through a town (coffee, shop, sight). Maybe others can jump in here.

Among other things, I didn’t understand this statement. What does Kurviger do itself, set the waypoint?
Do you mean it like this: you enter a search term into the search field, e.g., Sigmaringen, then you tap on one of the search results and Kurviger places a corresponding waypoint. Of course, this waypoint might sometimes end up in a pedestrian zone or a cemetery, since in this case it doesn’t check whether there is a road there. It’s probably the geographical center or something similar.
If you set such uncertain waypoints, you should take a look at them during planning and move them if necessary. Otherwise, it could lead to frustration.

I think @Andy2 means it that way and doesn’t like it. When I look at the Maps screenshots above, the waypoint list is simply the place name and the route goes around that point.

With Kurviger, it’s the center of the town, or in OSM’s case, simply where the place name is placed (learned something new, I find it interesting). Matches the marker from Maps. Although that is just a virtual point that I can’t see on-site.

While @Andy2 writes that Kurviger should _not_ set the point, it is marked on Maps as well. So it’s a special virtual “Via” waypoint—a kind of waypoint that doesn’t need to be driven through, but only roughly reached.

Here for Stuttgart, or valid for any town. What would Maps do?

 ![Screenshot_20260924_072404](https://forum.kurviger.com/uploads/default/original/3X/e/1/e1fcfbd2a6b3625d92fdfbc37ce36707a2f8157b.jpeg)

The use case would be—as far as I understand it—a simple rough planning that spits out a sensible route without needing manual adjustments. Pretty smart in that regard.

* * *

Does this go in the direction of the planned feature _[Audio point](https://forum.kurviger.com/t/wunsch-audio-point/14271)_?

Depending on the implementation, an audio point could also be such a virtual point that could be given certain properties and rules.

Let’s call the waypoint a “Magnetic Shaping Point” (MSP).

After initial skepticism, my brain is doing cartwheels right now. This could be Route Planning 3.0.

Such an MSP could have an adjustable magnetic strength. For example, 100% or 0 meters, which would make it a classic SP. At 0% and, say, 5000m, it would be as good as non-existent. Everything in between would “attract” the route and give the calculation engine some freedom to find a scenic route within the curveness parameters.

* * *

Thought experiment:
Town centers could be selectable like POIs. I select the town centers as MSPs. Kurviger then snakes its way through the magnetic fields.

Or I drop a new waypoint of type MSP out in the middle of nowhere and let Kurviger figure out a route.

* * *

In principle, these would be routes without explicit shaping points. Only in the background would Kurviger maintain a track / route that is used for subsequent functions like exporting.

* * *

This could also influence the search if town centers are displayed preferentially, and POIs are only shown when refining down to street names.

Hey Troffel,

That would be an option, it would already be enough for me if the automatically chosen via-point by Kurviger does not lie in any “no-go zone” and, taking into account the route settings between A and C, lies on the best possible point.

I’ll also take a look later to see what else, besides GMaps etc., stays out of the pedestrian zone.

There is the feature: placing points on the road. In addition, this should be displayed in route planning as a “dead-end sign” indicating that there is restricted access there. However, the safest method is to manually check the start or through-points and reposition them if necessary…

Back in the good old Rider 2 days — meaning before the Rider 4/5xx models — routing worked like this: when curvy roads were selected and I only specified the town during rough planning, the route would lead you toward the town, but either around it or just touch it briefly before heading to the next town. For example, a tour via Hamburg, Cologne, Basel, Berlin, Hamburg would result in a round trip without actually driving through the cities. If an explicit destination was entered, such as Berlin Alexanderplatz, you were actually led there. I think this is what the OP is wishing for.
