6-day motorcycle in northern/central Portugal

Hi all,

I’m planning a full 6-day motorcycle road trip in northern/central Portugal and would love some advice from people who know the area.

The basics:

  • Dates: riding March
  • Start and finish in Porto, as a loop with no repeated roads
  • Paved roads only

What I’m looking for:

  • The best and most scenic motorcycle roads in the region: mountains, valleys, rivers
  • As little city riding as possible, as much nature as possible
  • Avoiding motorways completely, unless there is really no alternative and only for a short stretch
  • Hard, very twisty days: up to about 200 km a day
  • Regular days: around 250 km (bit longer if needed, but not shorter)

My questions:

  1. Which roads or areas would you say are absolute must-rides in the north and centre of Portugal?
  2. Are there any “hidden gems” that tourists usually miss?
  3. What are road and weather conditions usually like in mid-March in the mountains (Serra da Estrela, Peneda-Gerês)? Are high roads often closed because of snow or ice at that time?
  4. Any recommended towns for overnight stays that work well for riders (safe parking, good food)?
  5. Anything else I should know about riding in Portugal in March?
  6. If you have GPX files, that would be very helpful.

March can be quite unpredictable in northern and central Portugal, especially in the mountains. Serra da Estrela and Peneda-Gerês can still have snow, ice, fog and wet roads at higher elevations, and some mountain roads may be closed. I would definitely keep the route flexible and check the conditions shortly before riding. For more detailed route planning, I’d probably ask an AI as well – it’s surprisingly good at this kind of thing. :wink:

We’re also planning a tour of Portugal, but in early June, when it’s a bit warmer and drier in the north.
