So…I used kurviger for the route planning for an extensive roadtrip last year. The trip ended when I got “nuked” by an SUV (luckily I was in a car and not on a motorbike). I don’t remember the crash, cops couldn’t quite sort it out, whatever. BUT: The cops told my parents (I was busy being in a coma) that the site where I had the accident is a “known racetrack” and that there’s “a crash once a week”.
So I wondered…maybe there’s a way to mark such sites? A warning label when you place a route across it? Similar to how kurviger warns you about tunnels.
As Kurviger is based on OSM - and if a road is tagged - it should be possible. I am not aware of a suitable tag. And it would be required that there are official signs, as anything else is a subjective danger.
There are other warnings like ice on bridges, and more, I would like to see even in Navigation.
The proper sign is round, red circle, and with a number inside on white background.
As here are often requests for speed limit warnings, and apps like “Radarbot, Blitzer Warning” are top ranked in the stores, I am not so optimistic, that an additional warning makes things better.
In the meantime the officials will just close roads for safety or protect the people on weekends from too much noise.
Thanks for your story. Perhaps this changes a little bit.
Thanks for sharing - and I’m glad to hear you’re okay after the accident.
The idea of warning markers like that is definitely interesting. I’d say the main challenge lies in obtaining reliable, objective and up-to-date data so that such warnings are truly effective.
Yeah…doesn’t work apparently. When I had the crash there was a 100kph speed limit. I haven’t gotten the full report the police produced, but the crash-site examination and “short report” talk of a meters-long brake-skid from the other car while still estimating a 100kph impact. Also, a week or so after my accident there was another one, and that time someone actually passed away. The speed limit got reduced, but according to a local I “ran into” on my car’s forum that didn’t make any difference in how people drive there
I was just thinking that maybe something could be done, since kurviger is mostly for motorbikes and I very nearly died in a car. I mean there is a road sign for “accident hotspots” but I don’t know if one is placed at that site.
