Android Auto: Switching from the car to the phone screen causes the GPS to fail

Hi everyone,
I keep running into the same problem over and over.
On Android Auto, if I try moving from the car infotainment screen to the phone screen l, the GPS goes mad and sets my location somewhere in the ocean. I am not sure but I think it might be at the North Pole.
I have to restart the phone for my location to be recognized again.
Is this a known issue? Is there a fix that isn’t “restart and clear cache”?

Hi @Dullahan,
This isn’t a known issue so far. Could you please share you debug information (Settings → scroll way to the bottom) and some details about your setup and the exact steps you’re taking when the issue occurs?
Does it happen when you disconnect from the AA Screen or when you switch screens manually? Which Android Auto Screen do you have? Which location provider do you use (Settings → Navigation: Location provider)?

I also use AA and am not familiar with this behaviour on a Samsung S23 Ultra.

Thank you for your response, I really appreciate it.

So, my phone is a Pixel 8 pro xl.
Without disconecting if I try switching screens between my car infotainment (stock Hyundai i40 from 2018, no changes) and my phone while the “follow” option is active, my location jumps somewhere north of Alaska, with the “true” location being in DE.
If I disconnect and reconnect after this happens, the location doesn’t get updated at all. If I turn the engine off and on, still the same. If I clear the app cache, nothing changes. The only thing that resets the “system” is a phone restart.
I tried with both the Google and Android location services. No changes in behaviour.

Debug info:
OSM date stamp: 11/10/2025
Version: 3.5.10
Device: Google - Pixel 8 Pro - Android: 16 - WebView: 141.0.7390.122
App-Version: 3.5.10 - 5681
Screen: 448 x 998 px - 3dppx

I tried it in my car just to test the app before trusting it with anything serious. If it helps troubleshooting, I can try it on my Africa Twin screen as well and report back. I did not expect the behaviour to be different between vehicles.

I ride with AA on Africa Twin and Samsung S10e since AA support has been introduced in Kurviger and have not experienced such problems. Also I do not remember anyone from two AT forums reporting this issue. Still, it might be helpful to make the test with AT, to see if the problem is on the Pixel or Hyundai side.

I assume the problem does not occur with other apps and Pixel-Hyundai combination?

Do you have the opportunity to test with another Android phone?

Indeed, GMaps, HereMaps, Waze work just fine. I wonder if it’s Hyunday’s system doing strange things like switching from the on-board GPS to the phone’s when switching “screens” and Kurviger does not expect it.
Anyway, thank you for the input. I will try with an older Samsung as well, good idea.

That would be my first guess as well. Kurviger is one of the few apps that allow to switch between AA and mobile device on the fly. So it could be possible. You could also try with your Pixel and AT to see if it works (you probably don’t even need to go on an actual ride).

I’m back with an interestimg find.
I tried a few more vehicles and on some it worked, on others it did not.
There seems to be a pattern though. On the vehicles that had their software updated in the past few years, everyrhing worked fine; on vehicles with older software (like my car, which, I believe, has the original one) Kkurviger did noy play nice.
Tried on:
Kia Xcee’d 2020 & Honda ATAS 2020 (both with the latest software) worked without problems no matter what the location provider was.
Toyota C-HR 2020 and the aforementioned Hyundai i40 2018 (both with older software) - the screen switching did noy work with any location provider.

Anyway, don’t know if there’s a fix or anything, butt as I’ll only seriously use the app on the AT, there shouldn’t be a problem.

Thank you very much for the update. Weird but very good to know. I guess it would be worthwhile to investigate, if we had a car / bike that showed this behavior at hand, but without a way for us to reproduce this, it would be really hard to fix.

I am happy that the issue is fixed for you, on the vehicles you care about.
