Feature request: Bring back independent GPS track recording

I would like to request bringing back independent GPS track recording, as it existed in earlier Kurviger versions.

The key point is to have a user-selectable option that keeps GPS recording active even when neither Navigation nor Follow Mode is running.

This is useful when simply exploring, following another rider, or when switching to another navigation app such as Google Maps in urban areas. I still want a complete GPX history of where I actually rode.

For me, this is one of the key benefits of a dedicated GPS navigator. I have kept all my Garmin ride recordings for years and regularly use BaseCamp to find roads or tracks I discovered accidentally and would otherwise never find again.

Ideally, when this option is enabled, Kurviger should simply keep recording in the background regardless of Navigation or Follow Mode.

My understanding is that the Kurviger app needs to be running as the main app in order this to work, but I am happy to be corrected.
e.g., if I have another app running on the screen, like Google Map, then Kurviger would not log the GPS information.
Kurviger should log all the time regardless if Kurviger is the active app, or running in the background.
And the key is that this feature can be activated by the user, so who likes it can use it and otherway around.

This should work, if you have granted location permission all the time.

On Android Auto there might be a problem as the system does not allow two navigation apps to run in parallel. Actually, my interpretation is that another app may run, but it is not allowed to display turn-by-turn instructions concurrently from the background. GPS-logging should not be the problem from AA point if view, so I hope @boldtrn can find a solution for this in the near future.

I can try that, but if that needs always manually start and stop, it is not the easiest implementation for the user. But I can investigate as well.
As an old Garmin XT user, Garmin implementation was really good.

It would be great, I will test soon.
I do not use AA at all.

Kurviger doesn’t have to be in the foreground for the Ride Recording to continue (if you gave all neccessary permissions, as mentioned above).

Of course, you’ll need to turn on Follow Mode once so that Kurviger knows to start recording from that point on. Here’s all information about the Ride Recording. :light_bulb:

Hi, I can agree that the Kurviger App continue recording even any other Navi App is started parallel. At least in the Apple world it function like this with the right permission.

Kurviger is used to follow the planned GPX track, replaces my former Garmin Navis. For the last miles home to a bigger city - I usually have 30-50km to reach the rural country - I usually start the TomTom Navi APP for the last miles in order to avoid congestions on the way home.

For AA I don’t see a well working option to work around this.

Can’t you just stop sending the turn instructions on AA and continue the navigation and GPX recording on the phone only? A couple of versions ago it was possible to start the navigation and GPX recording on the phone (without turn instructions on AA) and have another navigation app (Gmaps, TT-Go…) run on AA in parallel.
That is for me a clear indication that it can work, the app just needs to revert to this state instead of stopping the navigation.

Let me just use my :joker: here :

OK, I finally managed to test this, and it works exactly as described here. Great feature.

One problem is that one needs to remember to activate the recording by selecting Follow Mode, which is easy to forget.

Unfortunately, the internet connection requirement quickly showed its downside. Here in Australia, the vast majority of the landmass has no mobile coverage, and even some metropolitan areas have significant dead spots. Spending long periods completely offline while riding is therefore perfectly normal.

I understand why route calculation may require the cloud, but I have difficulty understanding why the only available option to save the recorded tracks is to the cloud.

During my test I wanted to switch from Follow Mode to Navigation. Saving the recorded track failed because there was no connection, and the only option offered was to discard the track before leaving Follow Mode. So, the entire recording was lost.

It would be great to have an option to save recorded tracks locally on the device and sync them to the cloud later when a connection becomes available.

Unfortunately, Kurviger currently relies too heavily on an internet connection. Other than that, Kurviger is awesome.

You can switch from Follow Mode to Navigation without loosing GPS record.

When you end Navigation just do not finish the Ride. Just don’t close the window.
You can than start a new Route, and GPS record will continue.

Admitted it is a bit hidden, but it is working. For me recording survived even a reboot.

Thanks for the tip, I will test that too.

I have just tested this again today - it is still possible to have Kurviger running in follow mode (and recording the ride) while navigating using other app (I tried with Google maps) on Android Auto. Kurviger actually at first shown the screen saying it is displayed on AA, but this was incorrect, because Google Maps was displayed on AA screen at that moment.

Bottom line - improvement should be definitely possible, but some programming needs to be done to avoid stopping gpx recording, when other Apps take over the navigation on AA. Maybe not trivial, but more comfortable solution should be feasible.

There are actually hard limits. The problem is, we are an AA app. If wouldn’t be an AA app, it would be easy. But as it is, we can’t reliably listen to the location in the background, if we are not the “navigating app” in AA. That said, it may work in your situation or not, that is actually decided by the Android system if we still receive location updates or not.

If that would be true, then Blitzer would not work on AA in the background, while Kurviger is navigating. So there must be a way. They also cook with water.

You have a point there, so we would need to double check.
