Mapillary experiences and opinions

As hinted by @boldtrn , I had a look at the Mapillary app as a possible means of automatically improving the OSM data.

To be honest, I wasn’t really impressed by the idea and the implementation, but that may be just my lack of understanding of the whole system.

Does anyone from the forum actively use Mapillary in combination with a motorcycle and could describe the setup and procedure used? Any other experiences to be shared?

Are there any opinions on this service? It apparently belongs to Meta (owners of Facebook, Whatsapp…), so is this just another way of big corporations exploiting users to collect data for their AI under cover of the “common good”?

META bought Mapillary a few years ago. They also used to map A LOT in OSM. See for example their OSM wiki page: Meta (company) - OpenStreetMap Wiki for more details on their mapping efforts. They are also doing quite a bit of open source support, for example at Maplibre. They certainly have financial interest in their contributions and don’t just do this for the greater good. So I don’t want to praise META, but all data on Mapillary is OSM compatible and can be used to map in OSM.

So I actually think Mapillary is helpful. But I totally agree that it is a pain to setup and I think it only makes sense on a motorcycle if you have a compatible action cam.

Yeah. My X3 does not appear to be a preferred solution and would require usage of a remote controller with an. integrated GPS receiver. And then you still need to upload gigabytes of data…

But ok, ignoring all that effort - if I just ride a countryside road with no speed limit signs and occasionally drive through a 5 houses village with the corresponding signs in Germany - would Mapillary be intelligent enogh to place 100km/h speed limits outside the village and 50km/h inside or are my expectations too optimistic? Would it also correct any wrong data?

Mapillary is just like Google Streetview. Anyone can look at it and fix OSM based on that. Some people might use it for speed, others to tag traffic lights or hydrants :person_shrugging: - but anyone can use it. For me, Mapillary unfortunately is not a good fit either, so I don’t contribute there, as I don’t have the right equipment. You can use your phone, but then you need to mount your phone in a way that the camera can see the surroundings.

Oh. Ok, I thought some AI would be analyzing the pictures and videos and put the information in the right place in OSM. If not, then I do not see the benefit of using it.
