Options to start my 3500 km roadtrip

Hi guys,

If the weather allows it, i Will Be going on a ±3500 km roadtrip through the alps.

My plan was to start around Bregenz, park my van there somewhere and take off with my motorcycle towards the alps.

Here is the link to the route: https://kurv.gr/uCayW

The second option would be to park somewhere east of the schwarzwald area so i can do the high part of the b500 on the way back.

In this case i wouldn’t Be able to visit some passes in eastern Switzerland.

What do you guys think would be the best option? Is the B500 A must see ?

I have 14 days to finish it so if you have more ideas, please let me know!

Thanks

Immediately stop making us jealous

B500 is speed limited and a very wide road, personally I would not recommend it. You may pick the smaller narrow and curvier roads nearby. If the wheater is good, I would always prefer one more day in the alps compared to B500 - the panoramic view is unbeatable. Strictly follow the speedlimit in Switzerland, the police there is not joking and you may become quick a poor man or even worse getting arrested and your bike confiscated for speeding.

Near Toblach you find Pragser Wildsee - I recommend a quick panoramic stop there. Also take maybe an extra day for the Sella round.

Have a great trip, maybe send us some pictures :star_struck:

Hi Stef,

I agree with @Guenther, park near Bregenz. A great route!

I have added my personal preference in 5 places:

  1. Instead of the Bregenzer Wald, I would take “die Scheideck”, the Riedbergpass, the Oberjoch and the Namlostal.
  2. I would replace Brixen - Sterzing with Rinnen and the Penser Joch (a few kilometers more, of course).
  3. I have had bad experiences with “lake promenades”, hence the ferry across Lake Como.
  4. The shortcut to Domodossola for the same reason (a matter of taste, of course).
  5. The Gotthard Pass over the old Tremola is a must!
    see the difference:

I didn’t go any further west of Grindelwald - I don’t know my way around there.
If you now load my alternative (https://kurv.gr/WxRyz) as an overlay, you can easily recognize the differences.

I hope you don’t want to start right away - some passes are not yet open!
Have fun! And no pictures please  - they only make us jealous.
BR Wolfgang

Thanks for the advice @Guenther !

I Will surely drop some pictures in the forum.
Good to know your opinion on the b500. Thanks!

Depending on the weather, i Will probably stick to my original plan + the speed limits

Wow thanks @zaphod_42 !
Don’t worry, i Will leave in the end of June :stuck_out_tongue:

Very useful tips. I have altered my route A little bit except for the ferry.
The Roads around lake Como i do enjoy.

Around Lugano im not sure yet so possibly i Will skip that also.

Regarding de gotthard pass i was inclining towards the newer Roads and not the old medieval ones. Why would you say that it is A must?

PS: im riding A stiff Z800, not A GS or Africa Twin🤣

Thanks again for your help and unfortunately, i Will have to drop some pictures in the forum

Looks beautiful indeed!
I think it was in this forum that someone suggested I take the new one because of the better road conditions but when it’s dry, I will take the old one just for the sake of it. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:
